July 31, 2014 - August 15, 2014

This project was about giving photography skills to kliptown students to document their daily lives and environment.

The workshop was based on offering 15 students basic photography skills to capture their lives. After the workshop was completed the students received awards for their participation in this project.

Mashumi Art Projects will be hosting this exhibition from the 31st July till 15th August 2014. This exhibition will be an eye-opener for all of us who have never experienced the life of these young students. We often forget that education in whatever form can change someone's life. I believe that through this wonderful project that Linda Dukess and Jody DiPerna has put together is a start on changing these young stars' lives.

The students in Kliptown live with up to four generations of their families in one or two-room shacks without electricity, running water or public services. We worked with several young, dynamic South African photographers to teach the students photography and photojournalism this July. We provided the digital equipment which would otherwise be available to them, and teach them how to publish their photos to blogs and websites.

We believe that learning photography is a way to foster creativity and connection. We want them to be able to show us the world through their eyes and to gain skills, confidence, and agency through the process.

Exhibitions of these photographs taken by the students and their teachers are planned for both South Africa and the United States. Proceeds from the exhibitions and sale of photographs will go to the Kliptown Youth Program to further their educational and arts programs in the community.
